The Childline Schools Service - NSPCC

Project Aim

ChildLine is there for children, online and by phone, 24 hours a day. We know the real dangers and worries children face and we know how important talking to someone can be.  Our research shows, however, that most of the children who call us are over 11. For many, abuse started many months or years before – they just didn’t know what to do or how to get help.

What does the project entail

We’re providing a free service talking to primary school children about abuse in all its forms. We educate children in an age appropriate way, giving them the confidence to talk about abuse and showing them how to seek help.  We want children to know that, if they are worried about themselves or their friends, there is something they can do and someone they can talk to.

The delivery model is in two stages. Firstly, we deliver a 30 minute assembly to Y5 and 6 pupils to inform children of the different types of abuse and where they can go to seek help. The second stage, which happens approximately 1-2 weeks later, is an interactive classroom-based workshop lasting up to 1 hour, to reinforce the assembly messages and encourage discussion and questions.

What is required from the school?

A commitment to the cause and a sensitivity with particilar issues.

Usual practice for project delivery would require a class-room, laptop, projector and a member of staff present.

How do the pupils directly benefit?

Pupils will learn what to do and who to talk to if they have an issue regarding abuse. Running the project through the school also enables pupils to feel they have another avenue to talk to if there are problems at home.

Good mental health and wellbeing is a vital part of childhood and imperative for learning. Issues at home can often creep in to affect attendance, behaviour and the ability to learn so it is important to ensure pupils are as happy as can be and come in to school ready to learn.
